Finally! Two Vinnie’s in Savannah

I made it to Savannah for a few days last week and managed to get to both Cousin Vinnie’s Jersey Style Pizza and Vinnie Van Go-Gos.  I took a big group with me to Cousin Vinnie’s for lunch and I have to say I was a little disappointed.  They scored only an 80 on the Sliker Scale, and a 3.5 Stars on the Yummy Scale.  The biggest problem, and I have to say that is a pretty big problem, is that they DID NOT use traditional pizza ovens.  They used ovens with conveyor belts.  As I’ve stated in the past, the conveyor belt method may invent things easier for the cook but it makes a big difference in the crust, and not for better.

This experience was adequate to form me rething my rating scale.  I’m not happy about the “Run by Italians” indicator considering frankly, these days, it’s just

not that simple.  whether the guy behind the counter has blonde hair do I assume he’s not Italian?  that is making me thing about removing the “Run by Italians” rating and doubling the importance of the Traditional Pizza Ovens.  What do you think?

Vinnie Van Go-Go’s, on the other hand, was a work of art.  That is a pun based on the whole “Vincent Van Gogh” thing which I assume is where the crazy name came from.  that place is in the Market Square area, just a few blocks from the river, and serves up some excellent slices just the way you want them.  WARNING– that place doesn’t open until around 4:00 pm.  I once drove 15 miles off the Interstate to get a slice for lunch and found them to be CLOSED.  I was a little disappointed…

Well, Pizza be with you, and to all good night.
